What Are CD and UD Profiles?
CD and UD profiles are two complementary light steel keels used primarily in suspended ceiling systems:
- CD Profile (Ceiling Stud) – A C-shaped section, typically sized at 60×27 mm, that forms the main supporting framework of a suspended ceiling. It provides structural stability and serves as the fixing point for gypsum boards and other decorative panels.
- UD Profile (Ceiling Track) – A U-shaped section, typically sized at 28×27 mm, that anchors the CD studs to the perimeter walls. Its groove design makes panel fixation simple while contributing to wall insulation and acoustic performance.
Both profiles are manufactured from galvanized steel strips, with thicknesses generally ranging from 0.3 mm to 1.2 mm depending on the application and the machine configuration. Together, they replace heavier, combustible, and warp-prone wooden framing with a non-combustible, dimensionally stable, and 100% recyclable alternative.
How the Roll Forming Machine Works
The CD/UD roll forming machine operates on the principle of cold roll forming—a continuous process that gradually bends a flat metal strip into a precise cross-section without heating, welding, or material waste. A typical production line follows this sequence:
- Decoiling – A manual or hydraulic decoiler (3-ton capacity) holds the galvanized steel coil and feeds it into the line under tension control.
- Leveling & Guiding – The strip passes through a leveling unit to remove coil set, then through an adjustable guide that ensures perfect alignment with the roller stations.
- Pre-Punching (Optional) – A servo-driven punching unit creates knock-out holes, service openings, or embossing patterns while the steel is still flat, guaranteeing accuracy.
- Roll Forming – The strip travels through 9 to 18 roller stations. At each station, a pair of hardened rollers (typically made from Cr12MoV alloy steel, quenched to HRC 58–62) makes a small incremental bend. By the final station, the strip has become a precise C or U section.
- Flying Cut-Off – A hydraulic or servo-driven flying shear cuts the continuous profile to pre-programmed lengths without stopping the line, maintaining tolerances of ±1 mm over 3 meters.
- Stacking & Strapping – Finished profiles are conveyed to an automatic stacker, bundled, and strapped with PP belts, ready for shipment.
